The Elementary School at OSNAS consists of grades K-6. Grades 1-2 learn in the same classroom as well as grades 3-4 and 5-6. This provides older students with the opportunity to serve as leaders and gives younger students an example to follow. It also allows younger grades to be challenged while older grades are reminded and reinforced in the important things previously learned. Teachers differentiate in the classroom to accommodate a variety of learning styles and by using whole class instruction, independent work and one-on-one time with the instructor. Our small class sizes enable teachers to offer a great degree of attention and personalized care that is unrivaled in the public school system. 6th graders are provided a “blended” year that allows them to spend part of their day in a main classroom and the other part of the day moving from class to class. This prepares them for the full departmentalization that takes place in 7th grade rather than abruptly moving them from one style of learning to the next.
Elementary students at OSNAS receive instruction in Math, English, Social Studies, Science, and Bible from their main teacher. They also take specialized classes taught by teachers with expertise in Spanish, Art, Choir, Computer, PE and Science/STEM Enrichment. All classes are taught from a Christian perspective and worldview since it is our sincere belief that all truth is God’s truth. This means that everything that is true has its source in God and if we leave God out of the picture, we end up with an incomplete and distorted view of reality. Alongside the learning that happens in the classroom, students often go on field trips that provide them with memorable learning moments.
Since we understand that parents are the most important and influential factor in a child’s development, OSNAS views education as a partnership in which parental involvement is welcomed and encouraged. Parents are informed on a regular basis through internet resources, conferences and open communication. This helps parents prepare their child for upcoming homework, exams and activities. Parents are also invited to take part in the PTO that plans student and family activities such as LEGO Night, Summer Swim in December, Child/Parent Valentine’s Day Dance, and more.
As for extracurriculars, all elementary students have the opportunity to take part in the annual Christmas and Spring choir and band concerts. In addition, students in grades K-6 are invited to participate in the Our Savior Junior Basketball League free of charge. Participants learn skills, develop teamwork, play games, and get to experience a “Mini Combine” where their skills are tested at the beginning and end of the program to check for improvement and growth. They are taught by experienced coaches who volunteer their time to bless the students.
