Girls Having Soccer Lesson

Why we do it

Physical training is a valuable component in a well-rounded education. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). As such, we are called to use them for the service of God and others. A healthy body allows a person to serve in ways that those who are unhealthy cannot.

With respect to sports, an athlete learns an abundance of valuable life lessons through competition. Among these are teamwork, humility, self-control, perseverance, hard work, concentration, poise under pressure and more. Athletics is the cauldron where character is forged.

How we teach it

Our P.E. classes seek to help students grow in their strength, stamina, flexibility, confidence and sportsmanship. Students begin each class with a brief warm-up and flexibility exercises to prevent injury. From there, students receive some instruction in the rules and fundamentals of a sport or activity before playing.

We attempt to offer students a variety of sports so they learn to try new things even if outside their comfort zone. Here is a typical break of the sports that are taught throughout the school year:

  • September/October – Soccer
  • November – Basketball
  • December – Self Defense Martial Arts
  • January – Volleyball
  • February – Wiffle Ball
  • March – Dodgeball
  • April – Ultimate Frisbee
  • May/June – Kickball

Students also take Health classes where they learn how to make healthy life choices. From a Christian perspective, good health is not limited to the physical realm, but includes mental, social, emotional and spiritual aspects. Since God has made us with bodies, souls and spirits (Genesis 2), we strive to teach health in a comprehensive way.
