No Summer Doldrums at OSNAS
Dear OSNAS Family,
I hope you are having a blessed summer up to this point. Summer camps at Our Savior have combined to give kids a healthy balance of fun and learning . We have one more week of camps and then Vacation Bible School (VBS) on August 5-9 from 9AM to 12PM. Kids in grades preschool (4 years old) to 6th will participate in live reenactments of Bible stories, science experiments, gym time, snacks, music, crafts and rocket building! Each child will construct and then shoot off their own rocket on the last day of VBS. Older students and adults can also join in on the fun by volunteering. Sign up here.
If you are looking to get a jump on school supplies, you can get some summer deals and access the list here.
In other news, 13 Long Island school districts (including Port Jeff) are suing social media companies due to the rising social emotional problems that they are experiencing due to these platforms. Since the advent of social media and the smartphone, youth across the globe have suffered from ever increasing rates of anxiety, depression, loneliness and self-harm. You can read about the documented evidence in the book The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. If social media and smartphones are noticeably harming our children in pandemic-like proportions, perhaps it’s time for some social (media and smartphone) distancing. Perhaps we will see that the social nature of these things isn’t helping our children socially. If you haven’t given your child a phone or allowed them on social media, consider having them wait. If your child already has these things and you see the cons outweighing the pros, God has you in the parent role for a reason, and that’s for you to make good decisions for your children until they are outside your jurisdiction.
May the Lord give you wisdom and grant you a spirit-filled second-half of your summer!
Peace in the Lord +
Dr. Stelzer
